Danny:  All you ever talk about is how you are suffocating in this arrangement, how you hated being tied to my family, how you hated being tied to me.  And now I'm giving you your ticket out of this.  I'm giving you what you always wanted and you're stalling.  What else do you want from me? 

 

   

 

Danny:  You know what?  It doesn't matter.  I really don't wanna talk about it.
Michelle:  I wanna talk about it because it matters to me.  Because you went up against your family again, you put yourself at risk again, Danny.

Michelle:  Yes I have a point.  Because if you go through with this you could put yourself in jail!  Danny…
Danny:  Did you ever think that I might be doing this for myself?  Maybe now I can have a life.  So, why don't you just stop asking so many questions and please, sign the annulment papers.
Michelle:  What?  You already have them?
Danny:  I'm having them drawn up.  Michelle, you can have your life back, they'll give you your life back, like you never lost it.  Right?  Like whatever happened between us never happened…

 

 

Jesse:  Is he forcing you into anything?
Danny:  Believe me, I could never force Michelle to do anything.

 

 

Drew:  We can't blame liquor for what happened between us.
Danny:  No we can't, misery loves company.  You had just found out that your life was a big lie and I was…
Drew:  Lying to yourself?
Danny:  Excuse me?

Michelle:  I'm going to visit my father in Europe.
Danny:  Oh, for how long?
Michelle:  I'm not sure.
Danny:  Ok, do you plan on coming back?
Michelle:  I don't know that either.  I don't know anything anymore, Danny.

 

 

Carmen:  I'm shopping for an attorney, Danny, not a boyfriend.
Danny:  Right.  Who needs a relationship when you've got Dietz to escort you to functions?

 

 

Carmen:  They're watching us, thanks to Michelle.
Danny:  No, thanks to you.  You're the one who called the FBI on us in order to pin it on Michelle, remember?
Carmen:  I just want this war between us to end.  Danny, I love you, you're my son.
Danny:  The annulment papers are gonna be ready any day now.  Let's call it an early Mother's Day gift `cause that's the only thing you're ever gonna get from me.

 

 

Danny:  Look, Pilar, all the harassment by the cops, all these lies in the press, it's been going on for a long time, since before we were born.  We are still being persecuted for things our grandfather did two generations ago.
Pilar:  Those are the exact words our lawyers say in each article.
Danny:  Because it's true.  Look, Pilar, when Grandfather Santos came to this country he had nothing; he didn't even know the language.  The only way that he could make a living for his family was to bend some rules.  He wasn't the only one, lots of businesses got started by bootlegging and smuggling, but as soon as he had enough to stand on his own he made the business legitimate, and it's been that way ever since.

 

 

Danny:  I thought I could protect her from all this.
Carmen:  Like you thought you could protect Michelle?  Face it, Danny, you're out of control ever since that girl came into your life.
Danny:  You mean since you drover her out of my life?  Isn't that what you mean?
Carmen:  Grow up and get over it!  Michelle is poison to you and I am not going to let her destroy any more of my family than she already has.
Danny:  You're not gonna touch her, I warned you.
Carmen:  Don't worry, I'm not gonna do anything, but look at what she has done to you, Danny.

 

 

Bill:  So what about Pilar?  What's gonna happen?  I mean, she knows everything now.
Danny:  I don't know.  Maybe she'll accept it, maybe she'll just take off and get as far away from here as she can.  You ever think about doing that?  About just getting in your car and taking off… driving until you end up… nowhere?

 

 

Bill:  Where ya gonna go?
Danny:  I'm just… I'm just gonna drive.

 

 

 

Danny:  What are you doing here?
Michelle:  Actually, I never left.
Danny:  What do you mean?  You didn't go visit your father?
Michelle:  No, no, I just kindof needed some time to think.
Danny:  What, you've been holed up here all this time?
Michelle:  Pretty much, yeah.  So that explains why I'm here but um, I guess my question would be… why are you?

 

 

Danny:  C'mon, wake up!  This isn't just about you and your feelings.  I mean, did you ever stop to think that since we met… that my life hasn't exactly been a picnic, either!?

 

 

Michelle:  I came here to think about Jesse and I can't, because I…
Danny:  Why not?
Michelle:  Because… I can't stop thinking about you… and I have tried.  I've really tried, and I can't get you out of my mind.

 

 

Michelle:  Jesse and I were really happy here, you know, and that meant a lot to me, it really meant a lot… then.  But now, um, all I've been able to think about is lying in that bed with you that night, and lying next to you, and I'm, I'm actually having a really difficult time remembering Jesse's face which scares me a lot, and I'm really surprised by the whole thing because it's not anything I expected at all… and I don't know what it is… but I can't keep fighting it, it's what's happening.

 

 

Michelle:  I was upset about Jesse because I didn't want to hurt him, and I still don't want to hurt him, but you're my husband.
Danny:  Come on, this marriage was nothing but a lie, you know that.
Michelle:  You're gonna tell me that you didn't feel anything when you were lying in that bed next to me, nothing when I walked down the aisle when we exchanged vows with each other?  Don't do that, God, don't do that, please, because you know that you did because I felt something, because I felt it when you kissed me.
Danny:  Look, I don't know what you're doing, but stop it!  Will you stop it?  I mean, we were pretending.  We did what we had to do just… to keep you alive, that's it!  That's it!
Michelle:  I can't pretend that well, Danny!  I couldn't pretend that well if I tried!  Do you know how much I wish that we could just go back and make it as simple as the way that we planned and as easy as that?  Something happened, I don't know, I don't know what it was, but something happened… and something, something made it real with us.  And I know that we deserve to make this marriage work and to give it a try, please.  Please, we need to make this, we need to make this work.  We owe it to ourselves.  Danny, I have tried so hard to fight feeling anything for you.  I've tried so hard.  And I can't… and I, I don't wanna fight any more…

 

 

 

Michelle:  I know we can make this work.  I know that we can because we can get away from your family.  You are not one of them, Danny. 
Danny:  Don't you get it?  I am one of them, I am, and you know, you can't change me.  And I can't be with you knowing that you want to change me.

Drew:  If you want this man, why don't you fight for him?
Michelle:  I have, you know?  I've fought every way that I know how to and that hasn't worked.
Drew:  He's a man, they can't hold out forever.
Michelle:  That's cute, Drew.

 

 

Michelle:  Can you look at me and honestly tell me that we mean nothing to each other, that we're not right together?  Can you look at me and know that for sure?
Danny:  I know, Michelle, I know that my life isn't right for you… that being together would only make us both miserable.
Michelle:  You can't know what's right for me, and you can't know what we would be together, and neither can I.  But you know what I do know?   Is when I'm passionate about something, I don't give up.  And I don't want this marriage to end.

 

 

Michelle:  I was so busy fighting you that I didn't realize that I was starting to have feelings, okay?  I didn't know how to deal with them, but I'm trying to deal with them now because I don't wanna have to look back and wonder what they were.

 

 

Michelle:  Do you remember when you told me that we had enough of a connection, of an understanding, that we could make this crazy marriage work?
Danny:  Look, I was wrong, okay?  I was wrong…
Michelle:  You weren't wrong.  You saw a connection before I could, before I would.
Danny:  Right, because you're in love with Jesse.
Michelle:  Because I was in love with Jesse.  Danny, being with you, it changed that somehow, I don't know.  Don't you see that everything has changed with you?  That has to say something.

 

 

Danny:  My mother brought me here, one day, when I was uh… fourteen.  She told me the facts of my life, my legacy.  I learned everything that day.  See, my father never really told me anything before he died `cause he said I wasn't a man yet and that I wouldn't understand.  But I became a man right here.  My mother told me everything about my family and what we do.  The history of every Santos generation… what we did to survive and what we must continue to do to protect the family.  She said we must never show our weakness, we must never be vulnerable with our enemies or we lose everything, we're dead.  And then she told me I am the future of this family, and that I must always do whatever it takes to protect the family, whatever it takes.  My life changed that day.  I learned who I am, and what will always be expected of me.

 

 

Michelle:  Are you telling me that I, that I imagined you feeling anything for me?
Danny:  Yes.  I wanted you to believe exactly what I wanted you to believe.  That way I could control you.  And believe me, you were hard to control.

 

 

Michelle:  Yesterday's kiss, I know you felt something.  You can't fake that, Danny.
Danny:  Oh... no, you can't fake it.  You're a beautiful girl, you are.  I'm a guy.  It's called lust.

 

 

Michelle:  So that kiss was just a bunch of pent up sexual frustration?
Danny:  Well it certainly wasn't the romance novel that you're writing in your mind.  I'm sor... have you ever thought what it would really be like living with me?  Have you?  Let's say we stay together, you wanna pursue your career as a doctor.  How long before your friends are saying, `nice marriage, she saves lives, he takes them.'?  And every time I go out of the house you're gonna wonder what I'm up to, but you won't really want to know.  And what if we have another argument? Are you gonna keep a knife in every room in the house to defend yourself?
Michelle:  Stop, Danny, you know that you would never do that to me,  I know you would never do that to me, because we would be together.  We would have a family... right?
Danny:  And what if one day I brought our son here, to this bench, and I told him what my mother told me.  Do you really want that for your children? You think you can just bring me into your world?  I would pull you into mine.. and it would destroy you, Michelle.

 

 

Danny:  Leave Pilar alone.  Don't mess with her.  I will not let you bully her into staying a part of this family!
Carmen:  Pilar!  She's my daughter!  I don't wanna lose her!
Danny:  Wake up!  You lost her!  She's gone!  For once, have some dignity and just let go, let go, mother…
Carmen:  What is happening to you?  What is happening to you?  What have you become?
Danny:  I've become you… are you satisfied?

 

 

Carmen:  Everything was fine!  Michelle Bauer has destroyed all of this!  Ever since she's come into our life, nothing, nothing has been the same!  Because of her I have lost one son I am not about to lose my other children!
Danny:  Don't talk to me!! Don't talk to me about loss!!  If you ever speak about Michelle that way again, I won't be responsible for what I do to you.

 

 

Danny:  What's the matter with you, huh?  I thought you hated being a Santos, why would you use our name like that, huh?
Pilar:  Because I was scared for you, don't you understand?  You're acting crazy, you're acting like a maniac!  If you don't get it together, you're gonna end up dead, Danny.
Danny:  You think I give a damn?  Huh?  Pilar, I'm already dead.

 

 

Abby:  Why don't you tell me about him.  Tell me what he's like.
Michelle:  Well, he's not a criminal like the rest of his family.
Abby:  That's not what I want to know, Michelle.
Michelle:  I know.
Abby:  Why don't you tell me why he makes you feel the way he does.
Michelle:  I don't know how I feel about him, Abby.
Abby:  I think you do.  I can see it in your eyes.
Michelle:  Ok, he's strong and he's gentle, and he's really, really passionate about things, about life.  He sees life with this incredible intensity; he just feels it.  When he looks at me it's like… it's like he's looking into my soul.  I've never felt like that at all before ever.

 

 

Abby:  What is it that you want, Michelle?
Michelle:  I want a husband who is my friend, and who is a partner, and who is gonna challenge me to be better than I am.

 

 

Abby:  It seems to me that you're more compatible now than you ever were, if he can see into your soul.
Michelle:  Abby, I don’t know if we have a chance anymore, I don't even know if we ever had one to begin with or if I just created that in my mind because from the beginning I was fighting him and I couldn't see the good parts of him, I was so busy pushing him away and resenting him.
Abby:  But I'm talking about now, Michelle.
Michelle:  I know, but I just want a piece of the past, you know, I just want a piece that I can hold onto like our wedding night that I could go back to, or the time at the lighthouse when he was so gentle with me, he was so caring and I couldn't respond `cause I was so anxious or frightened.
